"Fever Pitch"

Based on Nick Hornby's novel of the same name, "Fever Pitch" is an okay movie. There are no real surprises, yet no real let-downs either. It's your typical, garden-variety, romantic comedy that your girlfriend might make you see. And be thankful, because at least this one has baseball in it (the book, however, is based on soccer).

Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon meet in the off-season, and immediately hit it off. But, her friends ask, is he hiding? Why is he still single? Well, when baseball season rolls around, she finds out: he's a die-hard Red Sox fan. And we mean it. This guy would have trouble going to his own wedding if it was on the same day as a Yankees/Sox game. Anyway, the movie is basically about their struggle to develop a relationship that can coexist with his relationship to the Red Sox.

The movie, by the Farrelly brothers, could have gone either way with me. I could have seen it, or not, and am not affected either way. That may be a good thing for you, if you're looking for a brainless romantic comedy to watch. Or perhaps if you visited Boston, as I have, and would enjoy picking out all the places you've been. That was nice. Or perhaps you like hearing quotes like "Die, you Nazi spin bitch" or "...one of God's most pathetic creations...a Red Sox fan." Either way, this movie is bland, but maybe that's a good thing.
