"Bewitched"

Hell, as long as we're talking about magic, and those that use it. Wait, sounds like a Jerry Springer show: "Redneck Magic, and Those That Use It." Or, "I'm in love with a Centaur." Or maybe something on Fox like "When Magical Creatures Attack." Anyway, I watched "Bewitched" the other week on the plane, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, among others, and I have to admit, as much as it pains me, that I loved it.

Will plays Jack Wyatt, a ex-movie star looking to make his way back to the top. His plan: star in the new television version of Bewitched and cast a bunch of unknowns as his co-stars. Who does he get to play Samantha? None other than Isabel Bigelow (Kidman). Unbeknownst to him Isabel is a real witch looking to lead a "normal" life. When she finds out his plan, and he finds out she's a bigger hit than he is, well, of course they fall in love. Until her secret is revealed. Oh no!

Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine, and Jason Schwartzman all turn in good performances as well, as does Steve Carell doing a wonderful Uncle Arthur. I liked how this movie didn't try to turn the television show into a movie, as so many others do. Instead it used the premise of the show to create an entirely different movie. Until the end (you'll see). That's what I liked most about it. That, and the fact that it rekindled my love of Nicole Kidman. I used to love her to pieces back in the "Far and Away" days. Now maybe I will again. So, in closing, don't be the Mayor of Pussytown; be the Sheriff of Ballsville and rent this movie.
